Earth System Science and Technology

What is aimed at ESST

The research projects being conducted by the Department of Earth System Science and Technology address multi-disciplinary issues in earth environmental science and atmosphere-ocean engineering. In the former area, the emphasis is placed upon scientific understanding of fundamental characteristics of the earth system composed of atmosphere, ocean, and space plasma. The latter area aims to develop technologies which enables us to utilize natural resources and environment without exerting further stress on the earth’s system.

At present, the world is facing unprecedented ecological crises. The overall aim of this department is to contribute to solving the crises by advancing research in science and technology that permits sustainable development of human society, and by educating students to become experts in relevant academic deciplines.

As shown in the page of Sections & Staffs, this department consists of 14 laboratories; among which 3 are fully involved in the interdesciplinary graduate school and other 11 are cooperative laboratories from the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics and Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology.
